The project’s purpose is the creation of a three-dimensional interactive simulation, of two former mining facilities: "Porto Flavia" and "Galleria Henry". These simulations permit a high fidelity representation of the sites, while audio-visual interactive contents, strategically positioned along the public visit’s path, will illustrate their main features.

The product has a great photo-realistic impact, enabling a very interactive exploration by the user. However, at the same time, the simulation maintains a strong technical significance because the reconstruction employed the latest technologies and innovative systems for surveying, mapping, 3D modelling and 3D web interactivity.

Technical features
Projects’ fundamental working steps were:

Laser Scanner Survey:
More than two hundred 360° laser scans allowed a very accurate survey of the internal and external paths. The laser scan cloud of points has been “cleaned” and optimised, originating the accurate 3D model onto which the simulation is based.

Mapping:
Aero photogrammetric mapping obtained the orography needed to tie in the laser survey in a realistic and accurate environment. Mapping on scale 1:500 originated the terrain in the proximity up to one Km from the mining facility, while 1:10,000 scale mapping was used to 3D model the 16 square kilometres of surrounding landscape. Orthophotos in scale 1:2,000 and 1:10,000 “dressed” the maps in the final stage.

Photografic Survey:
A systematic photographic survey of all the facilities was necessary to acquire the textures for laser scanner model.

High performance 3D Engine:
The model originated from the technical processing was optimized, textured and then incorporated into a last generation 3D engine, in which all the graphic and interactivity features required by the virtual tour have been programmed. The entire tour has been optimized in order to enable content’s wide diffusion via Web and a simple but advanced virtual experience.
